Late 19th century French school. "The Princess Mathilde". Wa - Lot 195
Late 19th century French school. "The Princess Mathilde". Watercolor depicting the boat "Princesse Mathilde", built by the Nillus company (Dim.: 35.5 x 52.5 cm) (some slight missing of the pictorial layer in the upper part, and missing lower left corner). Charles-Michel Nillus (1798-1881) was a prolific industrialist who, with his sons, designed a number of boats and machines for the French Navy. He played an active role in local and industrial life in Le Havre, and was a town councillor in Graville. His company built steam boilers for ships, cranes and all kinds of iron-hulled boats, including the "Castor", the "Chamois", the "Ville de Pont-Audemer" and our own "Princesse Mathilde".
