Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Large gold-splashed silk panel with polychrome applied silk decoration of chidori birds on a blossoming tree. A large inscription, also applied to the right of the work, specifies that it was a gift to Prefect Makimura Masanao, Kyôto Prefecture, from the Mitsui group and its founder Takafuku (1808-1885). In a black lacquered wooden frame, decorated with butterflies in gold hiramaki-e, and a gold lacquered inscription on the side, giving the names of those who took part.
