Pair of calligrapher's scissors in steel, the slightly curve - Lot 253
Pair of calligrapher's scissors in steel, the slightly curved blades in 18K gold damascened steel decorated with foliate scrolls, openwork brass handle with calligraphic kufic motifs. Ottoman Turkey, 19th century. Gross weight: 93.5 g. (Length: 27 cm) Cf. a similar model in the Musée du Louvre, Paris. "This pair of scissors was used to cut or trim sheets of paper to the desired format. The length of these scissors enabled more precise cutting. The preciousness of all these objects, whose decorations and materials make them as much art objects as utilitarian objects, clearly shows the importance given to the art of calligraphy in the Ottoman courts: beautiful tools for good writing!"
