Brigadier general's tunic, model 1872, in fine black woollen - Lot 487
Brigadier general's tunic, model 1872, in fine black woollen cloth, double-breasted with senior officer's imprint, collar and sleeve embroidered with gold thread to the rank of brigadier general, decoration expectations on the left breast and a nominette attributing this tunic to General Auguste Mercier.
Born in Arras in 1833, Auguste Mercier became brigadier general in 1884. He is famous for having taken part in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the "Bloody Week". His name is remembered mainly for his active participation in the Dreyfus affair, during which he served as Minister of War. He died in 1921.
