Officer's esponton known as a "half spade". Wide-shouldered iron with central edge. Flanged socket, remains of gilding and long splints. The iron, engraved on one side with a radiant sun and on the other with the arms of France, refers to the 1690 regulations under the reign of King Louis XIV. The rest of the needlework seems to be typical of the period. Walnut shaft.
