François Pompon, born May 9, 1855 in Saulieu (Cote d'Or) and died May 6, 1933 in Paris, was a French sculptor. He is best known for his animal sculptures, whose innovative style is characterized by simplified forms and polished surfaces. In 1890, François Pompon joined the studio of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), where he worked as a practitioner in the marble department. He quickly gained the master's confidence, heading the studio from 1893 onwards. In 1905, he decided to simplify the form of his sculptures. He polished surfaces and eliminated details. But it wasn't until 1922 that he achieved belated fame, sending L'Ours Blanc to that year's Salon d'Automne, where its modernism stood in stark contrast to the aesthetics of nineteenth-century realist sculpture.
