Alexandre BIGOT (1862-1927), attributed to. Bas-relief composed of three blue enameled stoneware tiles with arum decoration. Art Nouveau period (the lower tiles of the panels are missing, one is cracked, and one tile is broken in two but complete).
For the 1900 Paris World's Fair, Alexandre Bigot not only created the ceramics for the entrance to the exhibition, based on designs by Paul Jouve, but also exhibited his creations in his own pavilion. The Pavillon Bigot, designed and built by architect Jules Lavirotte, is a formidable showcase for Alexandre Bigot.
After winning the Exhibition's grand prize, the pavilion was purchased by the director of the National Museum of Crafts and Arts in Budapest, dismantled and transported to the museum. The ceramics, stored in the museum's basement, were forgotten before being rediscovered during renovation work at the museum. They were exhibited in a retrospective at the museum in 1996. Among the ceramics that adorned the Pavillon Bigot were panels similar to this one, which adorned the entrance hall.
