Japan, Meiji period Two glazed stoneware subjects, one in Kyô-Satsuma (Satsuma of Kyôto) depicting the deity Kannon seated on an elephant, holding a lotus and a scroll, the elephant's robe and caparison with floral, polychrome and gold decoration; the other in Kutani stoneware depicting a caparisoned elephant forming a perfume burner, carrying the flaming jewel on its back forming a lid. With a gilded Satsuma mark on the side.
