Edouard ONSLOW (1830-1904) "Jeune fille pensive assise sur un tronc d'arbre". Oil on pine panel signed lower left (Dim.: 25.5 x 20.5 cm)
Edward ONSLOW, British aristocrat and member of Parliament, was forced to resign in 1781, accused of making homosexual advances. To quell the scandal, he chose to go into exile in France, settling in Auvergne. There, he married Rosalie Marie de Bourdeilles de Brantôme (1761-1842), of old Auvergne nobility from the younger branch of the famous writer Brantôme, from whom he had four sons, the first of whom was George Onslow, the famous classical music composer.
Bibliography: Andrée BARTHOMEUF and Françoise DAUDE "Edouard Onslow, un peintre en Auvergne au XIXe siècle", edition Un, Deux...Quatre.
