France. Pre-1882 infantry officer's saber, probably for Africa. Iron and horn mounting. Oval-shaped cap decorated with features, attached to the ferrule, features a shield vert with a silver unicorn prancing under a countal crown. Three-pronged hilt plus one on a jointed arch with a piece for the lanyard to pass through and a curved, teardrop-shaped quillon. Black filigree horn spindle. Straight blade with throat and two gutters, then two gutters on the half, made by Manchon frères. Iron scabbard with one strap and symmetrical stinger. Total length 94.5 cm. France, Third Republic period.
