Aimé-Jules DALOU (1838-1902). "The digger". Bronze proof wit - Lot 324
Aimé-Jules DALOU (1838-1902). "The digger". Bronze proof with brown patina. Signed Dalou on the base, and marked "cire perdue". Foundry stamped "Susse frères", and marked "bronze". (H. : 20 cm) At the end of his life, Dalou, who came from a working-class background, planned to create a Monument aux ouvriers. The whole thing would have measured 32 m in height. The monument was never erected. When Dalou died in 1902, only "Paysan" had been completed, and is now housed at the Musée d'Orsay. The figurines in the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris, however, were produced from 1910 onwards.
